Definition
Partner activation is the process of getting a signed partner to its first revenue-producing activity, such as a registered deal, a joint customer meeting or a first sale. It overlaps with onboarding but is measured differently. Onboarding tracks setup tasks like portal access and training, while activation tracks real selling activity.
Many programs sign partners who never produce a deal. Tracking activation shows how many new partners reach real selling activity and how long it takes them.
Common steps include picking a few target accounts together, running a joint call on a real prospect and setting a date for the first deal registration. Hands-on help from the channel manager matters most in the first few weeks.
In practice
A vendor counts a new MSP as activated when it registers its first deal, and the channel manager reviews any partner that has not reached that point within 90 days.
